Major consultation launching to help shape future of the Bailrigg Garden Village

Lancaster City Council is launching a new consultation to help shape proposals for the Bailrigg Garden Village.

Located in south Lancaster between the edge of the city and Galgate, at the heart of the garden village concept is the creation of a new settlement with its own distinct character.

Expert master-planners JTP have been appointed by the city council to lead work over the next three months to engage with people and organisations to draw up a detailed masterplan and design code to guide future development.

The overall ambition is to create a new village that meets all housing needs and provides opportunities for business creation and growth, creating an environment to live and work which allows both people and wildlife to thrive.

Other key ambitions for the masterplan include innovative environmental improvements and sustainable water management, along with improved sustainable travel options and connectivity to the city and surrounding settlements.

JTP will work collaboratively with the community and organisations, relevant landowners and prospective developers to draw up the masterplan.

Councillor Janice Hanson, cabinet member with responsibility for Economic Regeneration and Planning, said: “This is a once in a generation opportunity to increase Lancaster’s housing supply in a way which respects and reflects the needs of our communities.

“To get it right, and make it the best place it can be, we need the help of local people and I’d urge everyone to get involved and help us to shape this important project.”

A new website BailriggGardenVillage.co.uk provides more information on the consultation process and newsletters outlining the process are being distributed across south Lancaster.

Over the next three months the council and JTP will invite as many people and organisations as possible to get involved and contribute.

Background

In July 2020 Lancaster City Council adopted a new Local Plan for the district, which includes the designation of a new settlement known as Bailrigg Garden Village, south of Lancaster.

The Garden Village will be a distinct community, with several thousand homes to meet all needs and incomes, and opportunities for business creation and growth.

The city council has appointed architects JTP to engage with the local community and stakeholders and prepare a detailed masterplan for Bailrigg Garden Village and a design code for future development.
