Dominic Kelly

Make sure you visit Dominic Kelly giving his extroadinary performance on Friday 5th February 2010:

Dominic Kelly, a professional storyteller who lives in Yealand Redmayne shows his new piece, Crow, at The Storey Creatives Industries Centre this Friday. Crow, was premiered at Cambridge Storytelling Festival in May 2009 and since then it has been performed across the UK, at venues including the Soho Theatre in London’s West End, and at The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival. Yet the piece, which is based along the saltmarshes of Morecambe Bay, has never been performed back in Dominic’s own stamping ground. On Friday 5th February, at The Storey, Crow will be flying home for the first time, before heading south to The Barbican in London later in the month

Intelligent, ruthless, stark, graceful… crows haunt both our outer and inner landscapes. Dominic weaves stories of these black-feathered tricksters along a northern borderland. Here, in the shadows of his grandfather’s life and the saltmarsh channels, neither crows nor people are quite what they seem.

Errors

Errors are a post-electro band from Glasgow, Scotland. Formed in 2004 by Simon Ward, Stephen Livingstone and Greg Paterson, on the back of a 3 track demo recorded in Simon’s bedroom the band quickly set about making a name for themselves in their hometown with their unique take on Electro. Errors merged spiky new-wave guitars with deep bass-y Acid sounds with a knack for melody and pop hooks beyond their years. The band were soon taken under the wing of Mogwai who signed them to their Rock Action label alongside the likes of Part Chimp and James Orr Complex.

Their first 7” for the label ‘Hans Herman’ sold out of its limited pressing quickly and highlighted the band as “ones to watch”. The band followed up the success of their debut single with the release of the “How Clean Is Your Acid House?” EP a record that saw Errors raise the bar in terms of ambition and scope with the opening track ‘Mr. Milk’ becoming a signature tune for the band and brought them to the attention of the mainstream media with support for the record coming from DJ’s like Zane Lowe, John Kennedy and Vic Galloway along with sessions at Maida Vale for Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank and Huw Stephens.

Following the release of the ‘How Clean…’ EP the trio became a four piece, inviting long time friend and collaborator James Hamilton (ex-Multiplies/ex-Dananananaykroyd) to join the group as a permanent member. Having contributed drums to the ‘Hans Herman’ single and also tracks on the ‘How Clean…’ EP as well as occasional live appearances the step up from three to four piece seemed a natural progression and added a whole new dynamic and focus to the band’s live performance.

In 2007 the band set about work on their debut album with Mogwai’s John Cummings. Resolving not to fall into the trap of repeating themselves Errors decided that the LP would consist entirely of new material and would be, in their eyes, a “proper” album in contrast to a simple collection of their output to date. A move that would raise eyebrows when the final tracklisting was announced with the ommission of favourites like ‘Mr. Milk’, ‘Hans Herman’ and ‘Terror Tricks’. With their ideas in place they set about writing, re-writing, editing and re-writing again until they had managed to sculpt a record that matched their ambition. A limited 7” release of ‘Salut! France’ gave a brief taster of what to expect and gathered support from DJs, indie kids and music press across the board.

Their releases to date caught the attention of dance legends Underworld who invited the band to join them on a UK tour and presented an ideal opportunity to test out new material and works-in-progress to a brand new audience, with formative versions of ‘Toes’ and ‘National Prism’ being given live debuts. A period of recording, mixing, re-recording and remixing followed before finally in June 2008 ‘It’s Not Something But It Is Like Whatever” was released. A flippant, nonsensical title that manages to embody everything that’s great about Errors. It’s a record not only drawing on the unique sound that has become their signature, but builds on it; a merge of angular guitars, spiraling, euphoric synths and informed dance sounds underpinned by truly mesmerising beats and rhythms not to mention a memorable cameo from Oxford based diseuse George Pringle ‘It’s Not Something…’ is an expansive, ambitious, genre-defying piece of work. Zig-zagging from Math-rock to post-rock via Acid-House and Drone, Errors have managed to take on entire genres and in doing so, create one of their own.

Storey is classed as top venue!

Published Date: 26 November 2009
The Lancaster Guardian

I was bubbling over with expectancy last Tuesday night as I headed up Meeting House Lane for my first gig at the Storey Auditorium.
Lancaster Uni graduate band Hope and Social had dropped into the city where it all began for them, and I was eager to experience Lancaster's newest performance space.

The purpose-built flat-floored 'auditorium' accommodates around 200, and is well kitted out light and sound wise.
Following a slight delay, Lancaster's Uncle Jeff didn't waste time launching into their support set, which was okay for the most part.
Technically proficient though the band are, I didn't detect much joy in the performance and consequently it didn't evoke any in me.
Hope and Social however were brilliant, especially considering I'd gone in with a 'blind ear' (I'd not heard them before).
At times the sounds were almost sonic, reminiscent of Mogwai soundscapes and spiritualised harmonies in places but with more melody and humour.

There was an obvious vibe between lead vocalist Simon Wainwright and guitarist/backing vocalist Rich Huxley, and a brass section introduced in the second half added even more layers to the sound – helped along by the excellent acoustics in the auditorium.
Unexpectedly, the audience then became the 'kazoo section' – which was fun, lighthearted and got everyone smiling.

This is one of the best lesser known bands I've heard all year, and the venue shows promise too. It needs a bit of breaking in, and the entrance would be better placed at the back of the room, but I'm looking forward to the next touring performers at the Storey.

Superfluous gets a super media attention!

Hope and Social gig Pics!

The lecture theatre filled with intellectuals from across the North-West on Tuesday, as the music industry panel answered question after question from the eagerly awaiting audience.

With Uncle Jeff getting everybody in the mood, Hope and Social continued the evening on, playing a fantastic gig in The Storey Auditorium, filling the room will kazoos, acoustic moments and an atmosphere never to be forgotton!

Storey Gallery presents Radio Animal at Grizedale Arts

Grizedale Arts is hosting a Radio Animal event – a meal at which a number of invited people, including artists, curators and arts facilitators, animal studies scholars, and local interested parties will discuss the issue of ‘animal’.

We want to approach issues of identity in relation to animals. Why are we culturally so ambivalent in respect of who we are and how we should behave in the presence of either the term ‘animal’ or indeed animals themselves. As humans we are of course animals but culturally we tend to value those animals that are not ourselves or very, very like us, chiefly in relation to their effectiveness in fulfilling some human function or need or conversely the threat we believe they might hold to challenge our will or comfort.
Awareness of self, a faculty we (human-animals) believe separates us from other species, has unexpectedly brought us a troubled relationship with non-human animals. Because of this it could be argued, that a necessary psychological distance has been established between ourselves and those species over which we exercise the most control.
Because so much of what we are in adulthood is inherited, our subscription to this legacy, leads us to believe without question in the apparent cultural order of things. Such belief generally, is accepting of our dominion over others and an elevated evolutionary position in relation to other species and thus failing in turn to recognize an intrinsic interdependence between species. An acknowledgement of this, might well have helped us avoid many of the more difficult consequences we face today in respect of the environment and therefore paradoxically our own as well as everyone else’s survival.
The bottom line for such considerations is one concerning habitat – all species adapt well or less well, for better or for worse to different habitats and when those specialist habitats fail us, our ability to move, or to adapt quickly enough is tested. Uncertainty In The City (Snæbjörnsdóttir/Wilson, commissioned by Storey Gallery, Lancaster) is a speculative, artists’ exploration into the relationship between humans and the animals that nudge at and breach the borders of our homes. At the heart of this enquiry is the membrane that is breached, whether this is a material ‘skin’ of bricks and mortar, fences and land, or a linguistic contrivance.
Radio Animal has been on the road since early summer this year asking questions of people regarding their proximity with other species, and discussing their experiences with others in the home, hidden in the fabric of their home, in the garden and otherwise as they go about their daily business.

At a time when environmental doom is discussed as a global issue and overheard in some form by us on a daily basis, leaving us often with a sense of impotence in the face of the inevitable, artists Bryndís Snæbjörnsdóttir and Mark Wilson are examining what ‘environment’ might mean in a more intimate and domestic sense – where consideration of this term might trigger a more meaningful and evocative recognition for individuals and where the sharing of space between species and its consequences might resonate more powerfully allowing some chance of new understanding and even new behaviour.

Who says art and business don’t mix?

This month, internationally acclaimed, enterprising band Hope and Social return to Lancaster to play the launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2009 at The Storey Creative Industries Centre.

Since emerging last year from the ashes of Four Day Hombre, Hope and Social have recorded and released their debut EP and album and played key dates around the UK. They've played twice at Glastonbury; at the Acoustic Stage and selected from 1000’s of entries to headline Q Magazine’s “Emerging Talent” slots at the Queen’s Head stage. They also played the illustrious JD Set at the Luminaire in London this year and have been invited to play NXNE in Toronto.

The band are happy also to have garnered “Album of the Week” status from www.themusicmagazine.co.uk and numerous plays on 6 Music as Hope and Social have become a regular feature on Tom Robinson. Channel M TV in Manchester recently devoted a full 30-minute special to the band (see link below).

Soil fills our Music Room and Gallery

Pictures taken throughout The Future of Death Workshops...

Performances take place in The Storey Gallery:23rd and 24th October:

Soil fills our music rooms

The Future of Death workshops continue this week in preparation for the final performances taking place Friday 23rd and Saturday 24th October in The Storey Gallery...

London based A2 Company, the collaboration between artists Anton Mirto and Alit Kreiz, began research for this sensitive piece working with the terminally ill in palliative care, seeking to discover the changes of heart made on the verge of death, and how this knowledge might be put into practice. Out of this research came an evolving performance installation, The Future of Death, in which participants gradually bury each other with earth, following a two-week workshop with the company exploring the inter-relationship between living and dying.

Each instalment is unique and reflective of the time, place and personalities of the people involved.  See the results of this extraordinary process, undertaken only once before in the UK (ICA London 2005). The participants for this epic work are local, national and international and range in age from 2 years to 76.  The performance takes place in Lancaster’s stunningly refurbished Storey Gallery.

'AND' Festival presents Rule of Thirds

As part of the Abandon Normal Devices (AND) festival, folly is working in partnership with We Make Media to develop North, a programme of events and activities aimed at inspiring creative professionals to do

things differently.

Rule of Thirds is the very first North event to hit Cumbria in the lead up to the AND festival taking place in

Easter 2010. Rule of Thirds is a one day gathering of creative thinkers, meeting to discuss the impact of

digital culture on creative workflow, and to explore the exciting, developing opportunities for how we create,

communicate and collaborate.

Throughout the day we'll be exploring a challenging array of subjects through speaker presentations, open

debate and group exploration. We’re bringing together creative people from a range of disciplines to share

and learn, with an emphasis on exploring innovative approaches, creative workflows and new forms of

collaboration.

We have six excellent speakers lined up to present on a diverse range of inspiring and challenging

subjects: such as live performance, 3D web technology, digital engagement and play. In true AND style

Rule of Thirds will break from convention, taking a unique approach to our speaker sessions. We have

designed the format to allow attendees to get really engaged with the ideas being presented - not just to sit,

listen and learn, but also to question, probe and explore. The whole day is about gathering and sharing

knowledge, and to get inspired by new ways of doing things.

Rule of Thirds invites you to abandon the city and your normal methods of working and join us in South

Cumbria to learn, explore and debate. Lanternhouse International in Ulverston will provide the perfect

space to inspire creative conversations and ideas. Refreshments will be on tap throughout the day and

we'll even be providing lunch - all you need to do is bring yourself and your ideas.

The day-long event (9.00 am - 4.30 pm) is completely free. Bookings can be made online:

http://ruleofthirds.eventbrite.com

and more information can be found at the North website:

http://www.meetnorth.com

Further details about the speakers will be announced soon.

20 mph public meeting

Wednesday 21st October; 7.30pm

Held by The Green Party:

In The Storey Lecture Theatre

A pedestrian hit by a car at 40mph has only a 15% chance surviving.  At 30mph the chance increases to 55% but at 20mph 95% survive.

The meeting is jointly organised by city councillor John Whitelegg and county councillor Sam Riches.
Commenting on the general 20mph limit idea, John said;

“If we want our streets to be safe and calm and considerate for children, older people and those with mobility difficulties a general speed limit of 20mph does the trick.  20mph limits are already in place in many cities in mainland Europe and have produced massive reductions in deaths and injuries.  It is time we had them on every residential street in Lancaster, Morecambe and Heysham.”
Sam added;

“In the recent county council election I asked hundreds of residents in the area I now represent on the county council what they thought of a general 20mph limit for residential roads.  Over 80% said they really liked the idea.  We should now follow the example of Portsmouth and Oxford and get on with it.”

UISCEDWR - Reports from their tour!

Eyup lovelies,
Gig number three of the tour tonight, just taking it easy in sunny Tunbridge Wells before we hit the road and head into East Grinstead.

All going fabulously well so far, we even got the new PA out for Saturday night's gig and it was very well behaved! (Much to our relief!!)

The tour got off to a brilliant start in Andover on Friday, and we were dead chuffed to see so many people had come out to see us. Especially good to see Phil Neale who makes Cormac's Bodhrod sticks for us. He made us a giant bodhrod just for fun which often makes an appearance on our merch table, and told us he was thinking about making an even bigger one - YES PLEASE!! If he makes three we can have bodhrod battles between us whilst passing the time between gigs, ooooh just think of the mayhem. Speaking of the bodhrods they're selling really well so we're hoping to get them up on the website in time for Christmas. Watch this space...

Nick managed to make it down to Wales for the rehearsals with only a flat tyre to stop him this time, which considering what happened at Purbeck Festival was pretty good! Poor ol' Nick got stuck at the festival after his cam belt snapped on his car, and his breakdown cover had run out about 2 weeks before. A very interesting night of tent action, beans, vanity mirrors and bricks ensued before he got towed back to Cambridgeshire. The car in question has since been scrapped, and he's now got a new lady friend - Anneka the Audi - who's been on the road with us.

As for the Doblo, it's just had a new wiper blade and is chugging along nicely despite our heavy load (PA and all the gear and us!) so hopefully we'll make it back up north next week with out any probs.

Really great gig on Saturday in Liphook with our lovely friends Stuart and Auriol. James came out to join us for that one, so it was out with the bass and in with the bluegrass for one night. YEEEHAW! Yummy thai curry afterwards.... mmmmmmm. Have to come back to Liphook to play again, seriously good night.

Ok I have to go, or we'll be late for our sound check. Will try to remember to take some pictures for the next blog - any requests???!!

See you at a gig somewhere... somehow!
Love Anna xxx

UISCEDWR's support 'Joni Fuller' makes The Independent!

The famous Joni Fuller who is supporting UISCEDWR (playing at The Storey Creative Industries Centre on Wednesday 14th October 2009) has this week featured in The Independent. Her talent and creativity have won her awards in the past and this currently extremely successful solo singer/songwriter has been praised by The Independent for her determination to succeed and her passion for music.

"My parents aren't very musical, so when I asked for a violin aged four, they couldn't understand where I'd got the idea from," says Joni Fuller, now 17 and an award-winning singer/songwriter. "Ever since I can remember, music has been part of my life."

After months of being hounded, Fuller's parents gave in; aged five, she got her first violin. "I was focused from the start," she says. "Every night I would spend hours practising." Three years later, Fuller took up the piano and started composing. "Song-writing came naturally," she recalls.

Around the time that she first started composing, Fuller was accepted on a part-time course at the prestigious Junior Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, making her its youngest-ever member; the training she received there has influenced the music she writes today. "My songs would really be described as rock," she says. "But there are clear classical influences."

While training with the RNCM, Fuller was also accepted at Phil Collins' music foundation in Switzerland, which she would occasionally attend for masterclasses. It was at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, aged 11, that Fuller first sung in front of a large audience – 3,000 people, in fact.

Since then, her musical credits have mounted up. Most recently, Fuller won the coveted Make It/Break It songwriting competition, judged by Coldplay's Chris Martin and the producer Steve Levine among others. Next month, she has a consultation with EMI. "I know what a difficult place the music industry can be," says Fuller. "The important thing is that whatever I choose to do, I retain integrity." But whatever happens, Fuller, now 17 years old, has something to fall back on. Despite six-day weeks dedicated to music practice, she also managed to get straight As in her GCSEs and all As so far at A-Level. "It is a challenge trying to balance everything," she says. "But it's really important to have the academic qualifications; they have given me confidence and self-belief."

Proto-type Theater sends Air-mail from the 4th Plinth...

Rachel Baynton of Proto-type Theater will join 2400 people taking their place this year on the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square as part of Antony Gormley’s One & Other project which sees a different person on the plinth every hour, 24 hours a day for 100 days.

On Saturday July 25th, 5-6pm Rachel will be standing on the plinth and wants to know what you would say if you were up there. She intends to launch paper aeroplanes from the top of the plinth, with your messages written on them, to the world below. The messages will also be available to view and respond to at Proto-type Theater’s website on their plinthmail blog, www.proto-type.org/plinthmail.

Rachel said, ‘Antony Gormley (the artist behind The Angel of the North) described the One & Other project as being about the democratisation of art, that anyone could have an equal opportunity to take part and have an hour to present or communicate whatever they chose. I was lucky enough to receive one of those spots but not everyone can be. I’d really like to try and give a voice to those with something they want to say on the plinth but haven’t been given the chance to. If I shout then I’m not sure I’ll be heard over the noise in Trafalgar square so paper aeroplanes seemed a good way of sending a message.’

So, do you have something to say? Is there something that you’re passionate about that you’d like to draw attention to? Do you need to announce, explain, apologise, shout from the roof tops? If so then email Rachel at plinthmail@proto-type.org and she’ll pass the message on. Please include your name and location and keep your messages to approx. 50 words, thankyou!

Rachel will be launching your messages on Saturday July 25th, 5-6pm

Send your messages to plinthmail@proto-type.org
Find your messages at www.proto-type.org/plinthmail
Watch Rachel launch them at http://www.oneandother.co.uk/

Stories inspired by The Storey

Last Thursday night around 40 people joined the Litfest team and writer David Gaffney, as he lead us through the soon-to-be-reopened Storey building, reading his specially commissioned, and Storey-inspired short fictions along the way.
I’m pleased to say we’ve already had some lovely feedback on the event (see some of the comments on Litfest's blog and on their twitter page).

A download of the commissioned stories, entitled “Buildings Crying Out” is available now from the event page on Litfest’s website.

Calling all artists!

Green MOSS (Myerscough Outdoor Sculpture Show), an outdoor, site specific, sculpture show set in the beautiful grounds of Myerscough College, is looking for 5 artists to make site specific/themed, commissioned work which involves a local community group, as well as 15 artists who would like to loan work that fits with the theme “Green” and is suitable for outdoor display, and 1 poet / storyteller to assist in evaluation / feedback.

Green MOSS will show and promote the work of emerging and mid-career artists who live in Lancashire & South Lakeland; offer the artists professional development experiences including shadowing and mentoring; support artists interested in working with community groups to inform their artwork; and provide networking opportunities.

The deadline for submission of proposals is Monday 27th April, implementation will be from May to June 2009, and Green MOSS will take place from July to September 2009. Please note that this project is subject to successful funding.

If you would like to apply, please send your CV, a proposal outlining your approach and/or a description of your work, and a supporting statement outlining how taking part will benefit your arts practice to christine@prescap.co.uk

Robots Need Not Apply Part 2

The recruitment advertisement stated “Robots need not apply” and they didn’t. Newly appointed as centre manager of The Storey, there is nothing of the android about Neil Simpson.

Neil has a kaleidoscopic history in the arts and media. He began his career as co-writer of a comic strip for an English language magazine in Germany, moving on to become a successful DJ in the 90’s, although he claims “I was largely kept around for my uncanny ability to leap around like a fool”.

After completing a degree in performing arts, he went on to dance professionally, although injury led him to concentrate on installation and video shorts, with his work featuring in dance festivals and video platform events in the UK, Europe and the USA.

His credits include a short stint at stand-up comedy “I was awful”, as a musician for a French theatre company and as founder of COM dance, invited to perform at the Royal Festival Hall and the Laban Centre, whilst finding time to train in Brazilian martial arts, with the world master.

Neil directed Bury Met’s youth theatre, was dance development officer for Stockport’s arts team and worked with Action Factory Community Arts before joining the Creative Lancashire team in 2005, supporting creative industries as a coach, business analyst and project manager. He was instrumental in establishing their Sizzle and Supersonic networks and in realising the building of their £1.2 million pound creative industries centre.

Chair of the Storey Board, Baroness Ruth Henig says of the appointment: “Neil has an impressive background in the arts and creative industries, but he brings much more than his experience to this position.  His enthusiasm for The Storey means the centre will be managed by someone who shares our vision and passion for a stimulating, supportive environment, for work, rest and play.  Gifted to the people of Lancaster 120 years ago, The Storey will continue to benefit the whole community under Neil’s supervision”.

Lancaster Tourist Information Centre @ The Storey

We in Lancaster TIC and Tourism Service are currently planning our move into the newly refurbished Storey Creative Industries Centre. We're very excited to be a part of this project and can't wait to see the finished product! We're looking forward to being located in such a beautiful heritage building yet our new Visitor Information Centre will use modern display and interpretation to showcase the surrounding areas of Lancaster, Morecambe and the Lune Valley.

Here are some comments from our colleagues...their memories, impressions and hopes for the building.....

  • "I used to enjoy the peace and quiet of the Storey garden and orchard in the summer months, where I could go at lunch time to eat my sandwiches in the sun. I`m looking forward to doing that again."
  • "I love the look of the outside of the building and can't wait to see what the inside is like!"
  • "I used to visit the Storey Gallery regularly - it showed an interesting range of art and artists."
  • "In 1982/83 I went there a couple of days a week as part of my BTEC National Diploma Course I was doing with Lancaster and Morecambe College. The memories of the building are somewhat hazy with being so long ago. Also I occasionally visited the Tasting Garden next to the Storey on my lunch hours while working at the town hall, which was a haven of peace and tranquility."
  • "Living and working in Morecambe I had never been into the Storey before. I'm now interested to see what it has to offer."

Public art commission - The Public View.

On 10th of this month, Lancaster's shoppers became the first to view the proposed Storey public art commission. Suzanne Dimmock, Lancaster's Arts and Regeneration Officer, and artist, Tod Hanson, with representatives from The Storey, presented the designs to largely favourable feedback.  Everyone agreed that the artwork brought The Storey building back into focus.

The following is the press release for the public view.

Lancaster’s shoppers will be among the first to view preliminary designs for the planned Storey public art installation.
Tod Hanson, chosen from over 100 artists to design The Storey artwork, will display a scale model of the Grade II listed building, discuss designs for the project and show examples of his previous commissions at Lancaster’s outdoor market next Wednesday, 10th September.
Members of the public will get the chance to discuss the plans with Tod, learn more about the selection process and give their written thoughts on the project.
The Storey Institute is being remodelled as the North West’s leading Creative Industries Centre, opening early next year, and members of The Storey team will also be on hand to talk about the redevelopment.
Until now, only members of The Storey public art steering group and Board, the Lancaster and Morecambe Vision Board and Lancaster City Council have seen Tod’s designs which will be considered by Lancaster’sPlanning Committee in the near future.
The Arts Council of England is funding the first stage of The Storey installation and further funding is being sought from a number of trusts and foundations.
The £4.5 m Storey redevelopment is being realised with funding from the European Union, Lancaster City Council, the Arts Council of England and the North West Regional Development Agency.

'Airstrip' by Tod Hanson

Inspired by The Storey

The Storey board have named one of the UK’s most exciting contemporary artists as winner of their new public art commission.
Tod Hanson, whose work graces Manchester’s fabulous Victoria Baths, is finalising plans for the artwork, inspired by The Storey, to be a long-term feature outside the grade II listed building on Lancaster’s Meeting House Lane.
Following an open competition, a steering group, led by Lancaster’s Public Arts and Regeneration Officer, Suzanne Dimmock, selected the Chelsea Arts School graduate from more then a hundred artists vying for the prestigious commission.
Cllr. Abbott Bryning of the Storey Board and Lancaster’s cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration commented “We are delighted that an artist of Tod Hanson’s calibre  is developing ideas for The Storey and expect his design to reflect the contemporary nature of a creative industries centre.”
Funded by the Arts Council of England, plans for the commission will be released in July of this year and the final artwork completed for the official launch of the Storey on February 14th next year.
The Storey Institute is being remodelled as a purpose-designed centre for the creative industries, ensuring the building retains its prominent position while fulfilling the expectations of the 21st century creative industries.

www.onderful

The Storey website is launched. Isaac, the designer from Rehab, and Phil and Chris the programmers from Folly, have done a great job. It’s unusual to find designers and programmers who work so well together to create a user friendly and beautiful site,,, within budget!

Robots need not apply

The Storey robot

Isaac and I went into the Storey today to take the ‘robot’ pictures featured on this site. It’s very dusty in there and noisy, but very exciting to see the original doorways exposed. The beautiful staned glass windows and College or Art are covered for protection.

Funky Forkie Eats Art

Neil Wilson painting, untitled from Mr Forkie series

Neil Wilson, from Luneside Studios (resident in the Storey) has agreed to let us use one of his images for our EatArt page. We’re really pleased, not only is Neil a very fine artist, we also like this particular painting very much.

Art from the heart

The arts council is funding a dedicated public artwork for the launch of the Storey. Suzanne Dimmock, Lancaster’s public art and regeneration officer, co-ordinated the call for entries in 2007, with a deadline of 31st January this year. A huge number of artists applied and four have been commissioned to develop a proposal, one of whom will be selected to deliver their artwork. A group made up of board members, resident partners and representatives from the Council’s Tourism and Forward Planning teams will be responsible for the final decision.

A new chapter in the Storey

Building work at the Storey

The builders are in and the Storey has begun its next chapter. The Storey board, the funders and the council have worked long and hard to get here. Once the building work is completed, The Storey will be handed over to its Board – an unusually professional and dynamic group of people. They’ve given a huge amount of their time over to The Storey, so determined are they to make it a success.
